Snoring – Sleep Apnoea – Asthma – Crooked Teeth... What’s the link?

Snoring, sleep apnoea, asthma, crooked teeth... what's the link?

Research shows that children who mouth-breathe are more prone to enlarged adenoids/tonsils, glue ear, respiratory infections, asthma, allergies and chronic cough. If the mouth-breathing habit is not corrected it can lead to crooked teeth, receding chin, protruding nose, narrow airway and a high risk of developing respiratory or sleep-breathing disorders.

Glenn White of the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health outlined the Buteyko breathing method approach in the assessment and retraining of dysfunctional breathing:

  • The connection between mouth-breathing, over-breathing and craniofacial development.
  • How poor breathing habits can contribute to asthma and other respiratory disorders, anxiety/panic attacks and sleep breathing disorders (snoring - sleep apnoea).
  • How to assess dysfunctional breathing.
  • How to identify the signs and symptoms of dysfunctional breathing.
  • The Buteyko approach to breathing retraining.
  • An explanation of the six week Buteyko breathing retraining programme.
  • Demonstration of some key Buteyko breathing exercises used to help clear a blocked nose, and relieve breathlessness and stubborn cough.

The conference was an opportunity to share the work we do with the very people advocating for people with respiratory disorders in Australasia. We are committed to helping the Asthma Foundation of New Zealand achieve their vision of cutting hospital admissions for asthma by 25 percent by 2025.

Puffer Fish

Catching up with Chris Lam Sam and Sailor the Puffer Fish at the conference. Chris and Sailor hark from the Waikato and spent the last year performing 120 shows in schools, early childhood centres and hospitals helping to raise asthma awareness. The show is aimed at 5-10 year olds but that didn’t stop the oldies getting into the groove. Glenn is hoping some breathing awareness can be introduced into Sailor's show but first we need to donate him a nose.

Glenn, Teresa, Tricia

With National Education Services Manager Teresa Demetriou and fellow practitioner Tricia Enriquez-Gault. Teresa is a great networker and has been very supportive in helping raise awareness about the Buteyko programme.
